Reflection

  • What are your strengths? This could be artistic strengths, personal strengths, academic strengths. Not just what you are good at making, but what part of the process are you also good at (research, idea development)? What are you good at outside of college.

One of my main strengths is that I have a good amount of patience as well as having a passion for animation which makes me put more time and effort into it thus making it better then my other work. However that is just my opinion, I think I am good at finding research and different abstract techniques in the research.

  • What are your weaknesses? Again, this is not just artistic weaknesses but also personal, academic, etc.

One of my main weaknesses is definitely my lack of planning and therefore not storyboarding too much and instead just jumping straight into the animated scene. This can be problematic later on if I decide to try something new or I get stuck and think on the spot so, I definitely need to put more time into planning. I would also say drawing is one of my artistic weaknesses however I am trying to work on that as I will need to be a better Illustrator for animations in the future as well as the process of thus animation.

  • What do you want to be better at?

Out of my weaknesses I would want to get better at my planning as I have already started improving on my drawing slightly so I now need to mainly focus on planning and getting all the work done before the actual animation or project is created.

  • What type of artistic work could you happily never do again?

I am not 100% sure what work I would choose as I may not be the best at all the different type of work but I do enjoy them. But if I had to say one then maybe some sort of 3D architectural modelling.

  • What type of artist do you think you are? Are you more than one type of artist? A combination of several? Are you 2D or 3D? Are you something in between? Do you even know yet?

I am not 100% sure where I stand as an artist however I definitely do like 3D animation as it is nice to visualise in a 3D space. That being said I have also started to like the pure freedom with 2D as you can create anything with the tip of your brush which can change form easily in each different keyframe.

  • What do you want to do after your academic studies? University, apprenticeship, work, start your own company? What do you need to do in order to get to that place?

After this academic year I would love to go on to university where I will learn more in depth in my chosen field (animation) where I will get to explore and develop as an artist. I would also improve on my portfolio which will be a great representation of who I am and what my artwork entails. In order to get into university I will make sure to get the grades that will allow me into the university of my choice. I need to make sure I have passed all of my units prior to the final major project. Then for the final major project I must try and get a merit minimum although my ideal grade would be a distinction. I will achieve this by taking my time and planning out my work which will include a lot of concept art and ideas. My main goal is to try and show how my brain processed this unit which will show where I got my inspiration from. This will have to be evident.

  • What are you passionate about? What causes, issues, events, problems, etc are close to your heart? Environment, animals, social justice, politics, national or international issues, etc.

As of right now I am quite passionate about the environment as we do not have long to change global warming around and slow it down. So I would love for everyone to start being more healthy and environmentally friendly.

  • Is there a particular art genre of work with you would like to explore? Abstract, impressionism, modern art, post modern, African Art, realism, brutalism, minimalism, etc.

I love the idea of abstract art as I think there is room to be really creative which I think African art does well as they seem to be very unique and can be colourful a lot of the time.

  • Do you want to explore an emotion: drama, humour, sadness, grief, happiness, etc.

I think I would like to explore a range of emotions in which I could try and make the audience feel multiple emotions whilst viewing my work. Which could be happiness to sadness which will create such a sudden change that the audience will feel the sadness even more and feel empathy for the characters or themselves depending what the work is about.

Review

One of the main milestones of my learning is when we started the animation in unit 12 in which I connected and felt comfortable with the animation software and therefore progressed quite far. I think I have got a greater understanding for animation as well as the artwork needed to do so. I decided I was going to specialise in animation during the same most recent animated unit as I really got to have fun and experiment with 3D animation which led me to realise I enjoyed it as well as feeling quite in sync with it. I have always aimed to be an animator and therefore I mostly identified as an animation artist but didn’t identify as a specific type of animated artist. I first wanted to become a 2D animator as I had no experience in  3D and didn’t know too much about it, however through this year I have been shown 3D animation as well as lots of artwork needed for animation which I would say has opened my eyes up to any form of animation. Therefore for my final major project I am going to try and in cooperate different types of animation skills I have learnt to show the variation.

Project Concept & Proposed Artist Statement

The idea for my fmp project is to create an animation short which shows the impact of climate change and how we should change our actions rather then staying traditional with what we do. I would hope for this to show how bad climate change is getting in which the worse it gets the harder it is to turn climate change around and restore the earth. I think this should show people the impacts of climate change and what we can do to help, which hopefully will inspire others to help spread the message. Overall, I hope that more people understand what climate change is and how badly it is effecting us. My work will engage with the audience as this topic is relevant to all of us and I will demonstrate that in the animation by using humans to show what is happening. I will also give personalised names to the characters so that you are more engaged and related to what is happening. Viewers will discover the harsh truth about climate change and its effects on us today. The theme of my work is “Change versus tradition” which can be used in a variety of ways however I am going to focus it more towards traditional ways of how us humans live to how we should live to create a better environment. My work is going to be based on fact which will yet again create that harsh reality of the scenario. I may also add some fictional characters, but I haven’t thought that through yet. I am not creating a reaction to a mood but more towards a sensation of change and to further do better. I haven’t thought of a title yet but it will be along the lines of “Change”. I will work towards producing an inspiring piece of work that will change minds/give people a different view on it.

Methods

Since I am trying to show a range of animation skills, it is possible I will be doing both 3D and 2D animation in my project. I may use animate cc as well as Maya, very possibly mud box as well. I will use media found online to contribute to my idea’s as research such as news sources and campaigns/events. I will use these by looking for events/campaigns for environment activists and news sources to see if the main stream media reports on such thing and if so, what the data/statistics entails. Whilst in lesson I will try use software’s such as photoshop MudBox and animate cc as I do not have access to these software’s outside of college. I will however use Maya in lessons as well if necessary even though I do have access to it outside of college.

Evaluation

To review my work and check if it is successful, I will show it to my peers and ask them how they feel, if it motivates them to do more about global warming and enlightens them to how it is affecting us then I would deem it successful. I would also check if I stuck towards my original ideas and if the research I did was relevant/helped inspire me throughout my work. Although my work can still be successful, if the research didn’t inspire me it would still be lacking visual evidence of my process of thoughts. So, therefore I will try and demonstrate all of my thoughts and processes. To record the critical response of my audience I will give out a questionnaire which the audience will optionally answer and therefore give their feedback through that questionnaire. To evaluate my final major project I will look at the criteria to see if I followed and portrayed what my project is about correctly.

Change versus Tradition – theme possibility

Change versus Tradition is a great contrast between traditional ways/norms and how we are changing into a new society. This can be used in a many different time periods, for example we used to be barbaric and fight for land as well as territory  compared to now where we are a lot more civil and have built a society where we try and cooperate equality. I think this theme will work well with climate change due to the massive impact/change climate change has had on todays society as well as the different approaches we are going about it.

Facing Reality

Facing reality is another theme I thought of doing. I like the wording of it and how easy it connects

Climate Change

Climate change is a big problem in the world today, so I would like to incorporate this into my main message of an animation. I also think there is a lot too climate change and a lot of different factors that pay into it

Infographic_Impact_Climate_Change

Above shows some of the impacts of climate change. Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels have been used by us humans and therefore as of right now we are increasing how fast the climate changes. Due to this sudden increase rather natural climate change, most animals and habitats are dangerously effected and will be going extinct in the next few years.

Tim DeChristopher is an American climate activist as well as co-founder of the environmental group “peaceful uprising”.

Concerns about climate change in the United States between 2015 and 2018, by age group

Screen Shot 2020-03-17 at 10.13.31

Source:https://www.statista.com/statistics/492507/concerns-about-climate-change-united-states-by-age-group/

This is a graph of statistics that shows three different age ranges and their opinions on climate change. On the graph you can see how the highest percentage in all but one of the statements are from the age range of 18-34 year olds. All of the statements are suggesting that the participants understand global warming and are aware of it. So this does suggest that the most informed on global warming are the younger people. I could take this information in two different ways. I could choice to keep the target audience for younger generation because they are most likely to help protest and make change. On the other hand I could try and have a higher aged target audience so that I inform the older generation so that they can also help. However since global warming is most likely going to affect the younger generations it is very possible the older the person the less they care about climate change. Due to this being a big possibility I am thinking of trying to appeal to as many ages as possible because this issue is world wide and has no specification.

The Lorax Movie

This is an animated movie that demonstrates the effect of humans and how the climate changes due to said humans. The movie is a great representation of what happens in today’s world and how us humans will get more and more greedy due to it becoming successful in business.

I like how there is such a contrast in the movie. For example, in the beginning when the Human character first goes to the forest there is so much life and positive bright colours in the area which creates a nice happy atmosphere. This will cause the audience to feel happiness and joy which will mean when the character destroys the trees/the life in the area the sadness that would have been felt anyway will be greatly increased as it is such a contrast. For example, if they had just been shown the end result of the forest without showing all the life and colours before hand then people would feel sad but they wouldn’t feel as bad due to them not knowing what it was like before. In addition, once you add other living creatures/animals the audience will start to associate the forest as their home and build love for the cute and innocent animals which in turn will create the audience to be devastated once the forest is gone because as humans we can relate to how much we love our homes and wouldn’t want that to happen to us.

The Lorax was first created in the book called “The Lorax By Dr Seuss” which even got banned in a California school in 1989 because it was believed to portray logging in a poor light and would turn children against foresting and such industries. This shows how the book must of been effective in showing the negative connotations with deforestation and how it will harm the habitat.

As you can see in the two images above all colour is saturated and the only life/colour left is in the animals. However, the animals colour is a lot darker then it was before the deforestation which also shows the life has been drained from them and are most likely starving/dying. This shows how the whole area has been drained of all its life due to the logging/deforestation from the humans. You can also see from the characters poses and positioning how distraught and sad they are.  You can also see the stumps of the trees which shows the previous life and makes you realise what happened.

THe lorax green suit

In this screen grab from “The Lorax” you see all the colour drained from the forest and habitat around the character (similar to the image before) however this time the human that destroyed said habitat is wearing a green suit. The colour green is mostly recognised as the colour that represents nature and life. So by having the human wear this colour shows how he has drained all the colour/life from around him and it has gone into him. That is how I interpreted it, however you could also say that it is juxtaposition.

Avatar – Movie

Avatar

James Cameron is the director of the Avatar movie. I like anal. James Cameron is known for his strong opinions on climate change and how “people need to wake up” due to climate change rapidly getting worse. Him and his wife Amis Cameron have been a championing environmentalist causes for decades. His wife Amis Cameron has led a charge toward plant-based eating in efforts to reduce the dramatic carbon footprint that meat protein creates. In the film “Avatar” James Cameron has woven climate-conscious themes by creating the story of us humans going to a new planet/habitat and destroying it for our personal gain. I think this worked well for a lot of the younger audience who wouldn’t necessarily know about climate change. So instead they see this movie and sub consciously start realising the problem with what the humans were doing. Therefore having that positive environmentally friendly mindset which is great for when the grow up as they will try and make a change.

https://variety.com/2019/film/news/james-cameron-avatar-suzy-cameron-climate-change-crisis-1203329360/ this is the website I found explaining how him and his wife support the environment.

Steve Cutts – Illustrator

Steve Cutts is a London based illustrator who conveys the satirises the excesses of the modern society. His style is inspired 1930-40s cartoons as well as modern day comics. His work is very interesting and has many different techniques of showing a scenario as well as a nice amount of double meanings. That is the main reason I enjoy his work, because you may have to watch something twice to really understand what he was suggesting through that animation/illustration.

In this Animation Steve Cutts reverses the roles in global warming with us (the humans) becoming the effected and the animals becoming the ones who effect us. In reality we are the ones that effect animals habitats in many scenarios such as us chopping down trees and destroying their homes or us polluting so fast that climate change is rapid and polar bears will be stranded on the little amount of icebergs that are left.

By reversing the roles of the humans with the animals it will connect more with the audience as our human instinct is to provide and reproduce so if we see how it can effect us then we are more likely to feel worse about the situation and want to change it.

This is evident in everyday activities, most humans eat meat (me included) and therefore subconsciously we are okay knowing that a pig or a cow has died so we can eat this. However if we were eating human meat we would feel horrified and disgust knowing that the meat came from a fellow human. Even if the meat tasted exactly the same you wouldn’t want to eat it due to it coming from a human. So by reversing the roles people are more likely going to feel for the humans in this animation and want change.

unknown.png

In this scene in particular a cat is sat on a sofa at home. The cats posture is identical to a humans posture when sat down. This scene is used to really show how the roles have been reversed as they have made sure the cat is sitting human like and the human is smaller and curled up on the cats lap like an actual cat would sit on a humans lap. This position is a very known position to be in at home if you have a pet cat so this really does emphasise how every single role has been reversed.

Steve Cutts 2.png

In the photo above you see the in between frames of a transition. It is done perfectly so that you can see exactly what the object is that was stuck in the humans throat. It is being held by the bear which shows that the bear is responsible for the bottle being stuck in the humans throat. This is a smart transition as it clearly links the effected to the animal that created the affect. I really like this transition and may use as similar one in my own animation as I think it is really strong and gives you the exact reason the humans are being effected.

In this animation Steve Cutts yet again shows the reality of our human species and what our world is really like. He starts by animating a rat. Most people associate rats as nasty and disgusting creatures due to their living conditions and the many diseases they can carry. So initally you watch this thinking “ew” and “that is not very pleasant” then you realise the rats are representing the humans which is Steve Cutts representing us humans and disgusting creatures. He does this by making the rats live, dress and act like humans. In this animation he shows the harsh reality of the world just to a more extreme state as it is animation and animation is limitless so by making it more harsh the viewers are going to be taking the message in more and feeling the urge to rebel against the current society.

Throughout the animation you see a journey through one of the rats lives as it struggles to find happiness. You see it only grasps “happiness” through drugs and a nice car which only last a short while .

My favourite part of the animation is at the end when the rat is chasing a 100 dollar bill and ends up getting trapped by a rat trap. The rat trap keeps him trapped to a desk with a computer to do work. I really like it as it is suggesting that the only way he is getting that money is if he does a typical 9-5 job sat at the computer. It is very cleaver to use a rat trap due to the character being an actual rat.

This animation is shorter and shows a man that is about to die and his thoughts and experiences in his life.

First off in the scene it is black and white shades only. One object (banana skin) is coloured and bright so very obvious. However the character seems to not notice it and slips on it. Which makes me think it wasn’t fully an accident and the character had the choice to avoid it but he did it on purpose. He then nearly falls off but manages to catch his balance. Then another coloured insect comes on the screen it is a butterfly which is is known for being delicate and not weighing a lot. The butterfly lands on him which causes him to lose balance and fall off the building. To me this is another sign that it was ever so slightly intentional and could have been avoided. This also may be a reference to the famous saying “sometimes its the small things that push you off the edge”

Then whilst he is falling he watches a small documentation of his life. In the documentary you can see how he was happy until he got a job and then he got extremely unhappy and seemed to hate his job. So after watching the documentary of his life he then realises that he is actually happy with dying and isn’t scared anymore. Before watching the documentary you can see his mouth open and his eyes filled with fear as he  is about to die. But after as I said his whole mood changes and he shrugs as if “you know what my life is pretty boring so I don’t mind dying” and he accepts his death. Even though he was scared originally I still think he subconsciously wanted to fall due him ignoring the obvious banana and butterfly which wouldn’t of actually made him fall he just choice to ignore them.

This animated piece is similar to the “happiness” one that showed a rat looking for happiness. As a lot of it is showing how much people are just following the system and all seem the same looking down at their phones and walking like the rats were. This animation is definitely more focused on mobile phones and the fact that we spend every second of our lives on them. It makes us blind to all the stuff/problems going on around us. In one of the clips he showed a miserable sad women who when she took a selfie became a lot better looking and seemed perfect, however this shows that the phones hide the truth and in fact she was not happy nor was she perfect. I like that idea of how the phone distorted the reality of the situation and I will most definitely take in consideration to use that same technique but with media and the actual harshness of climate change.

This animation has a similar theme which is about the whole depiction of society and how corrupt and fake all the media is. They common character starts off as a kid watching all his favourite shows which look all nice happy and fun until he turns back onto one of the shows and the tv glitches slightly. The tv shows the truth behind the shows like the cast and what they are actually like and how they were acting/faking being friends and all happy. It starts off with all these kids shows but have some actual messages behind them. One of the shows showed four rabbits holding up signs about oppression and the funding for war etc which then got interrupted by rabbits dressed as police beating them and trying to get rid of their message. By creating the characters to be rabbits which are known for being cute and innocent it really shows how something that looks so real and happy before can be in fact fake as well as sad. This was the main message behind the animation with clips throughout it showing how every single bit of news or media you see is fake or twisted in some sort of way.

This animation is more about showing the harsh reality of some peoples living situations. Rather than having double meanings with smart juxtaposition Steve Cutts has a consistent story of this boy trying to get home, which in tails a lot of harsh nasty circumstances. If I were to take something from this animation it would be to make some animated scenes really harsh and gruesome to actually show what it is like rather then censoring it to look more pleasing.

Max Porter & Ru Kuwahata

This stop-motion animation is quite clever. the theme seems to be about negative space and the relationship between the son and the father. In the animation you see a man who is constantly working away from home so therefore is always packing his suitcase which he packs perfectly leaving no empty/negative space. He always makes sure to pack it tightly as he doesn’t like the idea of wasted space which is ironic since he wasted a lot of time with his son by constantly working away. When the dad dies and gets put in his coffin his son said ‘look at all that wasted space’ I think is referring to periods of time in the past where time was not spent together and therefore lots of  opportunities wasted. I like the thought behind this animation so I might try and in cooperate some negative space and double meanings in my animation.

Lubomir Arsov-Illustrator

Lubomir Arsov started creating comics and new stories for his characters, when he moved to Toronto at the age of twelve recognising creativity as the greatest power for communication and for the representation of emotions, moods and experiences. The animation above is one of his own personal creations  “In-Shadow”, a journey through the fragmented unconscious of the West, that represents the precarious and degraded condition of our contemporaneity. The characters and visuals he uses are very creative and unique. I also like how it is not necessarily a smooth animation but rather a series of strong images that have small movement in them so it does not feel like a slideshow. The image he creates tells the story on its own and is therefore not necessary to animate too much. Due to the current situation of COVID-19 and me not being able to work from college I may not be able to animate the 2D aspects so might do something very similar to this animation. Where I create a scene and then pan the camera around. However this art is of a very high standard with some great production which I may not master.

As well as having a unique artistic design he also has some interesting/obscure ideas which have a deeper meaning most of the time which I really like. So I might try to use similar techniques of ideas in my work.

Paweł Kuczyński

Paweł Kuczyński is a Polish born political art satirist and philosopher who is anti-war.  In his art there is usually two different subjects of focus that have been merged together to create another meaning. For instance the image of the guy mowing the lawn. This image has both someone mowing a lawn and kids looking down at their phone, this suggests the creative kids that explore above (lift their head up away from their phone) are moan down by the people above (government). Therefore they are saying that the government don’t like unique creative people and want to keep cutting down as many as they can so that no one rebels and they do simple 9-5 jobs. That is how I took it anyways, I may not be right but that’s what I think. This can be seen with each image of his work they all show different meanings.

John Holcroft

John Holcroft is a english born artist very similar to Pawel Kuczyński. John Holcroft has a similar concept to Pawel as they both get two different objects and merge them together to create a different meaning. For instance one of Holcrofts art pieces is a cigarette which has coins being burnt off at the end of it. To me this is suggesting that each cigarette you smoke is wasting money. It is common knowledge that cigarette’s cost quite a bit of money so this image is reminding each time you smoke a cigarette that your money is being wasted and just falling away. Another piece of his art has someone sat at their desk in front of their computer monitor. The person is wearing a mask over his face which I am guessing is a reference to how people online aren’t themselves and will say and act different then they are in person, so by putting a mask round his face you can see that he is putting on a different identity.

One of my favourites of his work is the image in the top left which has a Venus fly trap styled plant with different applications as their identity. It is suggesting that these apps are waiting for us to download them so they can catch us and keep us hooked scrolling endlessly through their app. This piece of art is intriguing to me as I know first hand that you can easily become caught addicted to an app and scroll endlessly waiting for a reply or something to change.

Australian Wildfire

australia-fire-map

Australia is known for having a lot of wildfires but in December-January the fires peaked and have known to of burnt and estimated of 46 million acres. It seems that the fires are progressively getting worse due to climate change. A journalist that works for The New York Times known as Henry Fountain made an article explaining that scientists confirm that climate change affected Australia’s wildfires. The researchers found that it is at least 30 percent if not more likely to cause widespread burning than a world without global warming.

“The researchers said the full influence of climate change on the fires was probably much greater, but that climate simulations, which form the basis of this type of study, underestimate trends in extreme heat in Australia compared with real-world observational data.”

To me this seems more than enough evidence to prove that climate change has had a negative effect on us and that it has actually put peoples lives in danger by 34 people dying from the Australian wildfires and over 1 billion animals dead some of which are close to if not extinct. Since this was such a world wide known thing I am hoping that it has made climate change more known to the people that claim it is fake. I am planning on referencing the fires in my animation so it helps create that link in peoples brain (Australian Wildfires is due to climate change).

Henry Fountain likes to covers climate change, with a focus on the innovations that will be needed to overcome it. He has done a quite few articles on climate change however I was most intrigued by the Australians wildfires.

Elon Musk

Elon musk is an engineer, industrial designer, and technology entrepreneur. He is very well known for being a billionaire and owning many different companies. A car company known as Tesla that he owns is very well known for being fully electric and trying to change cars for the better. He is very open about his dislike to fossil fuelled companies as well as the damage it causes to our planet. Some people may think he is just doing this to get more attention for his own electric cars in which he makes his cars seem better and therefore will sell more, making more money from his business. This may or may not be true but one way or the other he is still helping to create a better climate, even if it is for his own personal gain he is using his status for the better rather than the worse. It is very possible I may include electric cars in my animation so  I will know what cars to look at from Elon Musk’s range of Tesla’s.

Athabasca Glacier

Canadian glacier walk.png

Athabasca Glacier is a known glacier tourist attraction that is in Canada. As you can see a lot of the glacier has already melted away in less than 100 years. In the most recent years it has only increased so in the next 10 or 20 years the whole glacier could be gone. This is yet another bit of proof that climate change exists and is melting more ice then ever. There may not of been any habitats living on that glacier however, if you think how much ice has melted and think of icebergs that polar bears live on then it will show how it could danger them.Glacier walk pole.jpg

I was lucky enough to go there on holiday and experience a glacier walk where I got to walk along it with a guide. Throughout the walk the guide pointed out these massive metal like poles that were placed in the ice. The guide explained that they are used to show how much ice has melted. For example they would put the pole deep into the ground until only the top was remaining, then when the ice melts you see more and more of the pole each time. They also would put coloured tags around the pole to show each year or certain time stamps on the pole. It was interesting because the pole I saw had only been put up a year or two before but yet was nearly double my height. So within those two years it had managed to melt a large amount of the glacier. This has helped put in perspective how fast climate change is increasing as well as giving me some information on the metal poles which I might use in my animation to help show the change.

Concept art

I did some concept art whilst I was still in college, these may not be what I do use in my animation however it was to give me some starting ideas of what I might showcase.

Concept art 1

First I have a frozen ice lake which I was planning to show the change from how it is cold and icy now to what it will be like a few years down the line due to climate change. I would show how it has melted and only a small amount of snow will be left. I would probably have some polar bears in each scene, with one scene having a larger population of polar bears and the other scene only having a few to really make people understand that they will go extinct if we carry on.

Concept art 2 poluted lake 2

In this piece of concept art I was trying to create a polluted sewer area. In this scene I may of shown what some of our waste looks like whilst covering a lot of it with rubbish to make it unpleasant. I would also add birds that are looking for food and end up eating rubbish to show some of the affects.

Character practice designs

Screen Shot 2020-03-12 at 15.44.15

image1 (3).jpeg

I had started messing around with little quick characters on Photoshop and a drawing pad whilst I still had access to them in college. They are not in final form at all it was just to help get some ideas flowing. I also drew with pencil in a sketchbook but yet again it wasn’t a final character design, they are just tests.

social/Cultural

Climate change has a lot of negative effects on the world. As many people know it will affect other animals very badly as well as creating a worse climate. However these are not the only effects, A lot of people seem to forget that climate change will also affect us humans. For example, Ski resorts will potentially have to be closed due to the lack of snow since the temperatures will rise and therefore snow will melt. In the UK alone this can happen with the Scottish ski resorts. As well as it affecting our ski resorts I am sure that eventually if it gets too hot it could potentially damage us and our skin.

political

unknown

Website used:https://www.brookings.edu/research/the-challenging-politics-of-climate-change/

I found this graph which shows the opinions of democrats and republicans on climate change. Democrats and Republicans are american terms for liberals and conservatives.

In the graph it shows that the democrats (liberals) were more aware of climate change and knew it had already started. In fact the further through time it goes the wider the gap between the democrats and republicans gets. To me, this shows that out of the two parties, the democrats are more likely to try and make a change about climate change.

Liberalism on climate change

On the website: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-01-18/how-liberalism-can-solve-inequality-and-climate-change it suggested that “Liberalism can solve inequality and climate change” They went on to explain that

War Posters

Aulich, J., 2007. War Posters. New York: Thames & Hudson.

In this book I found many war posters in which I found three I really liked. One of them is an edited version of the original. The one on the far right is the edited version and is actually against war. As you can see the person has edited it so it looks like a gun shot has broken the poster and on the other side is a skeleton. To me this is suggesting if you go to war you will get shot and turn into a skeleton (die).

The other posters are both very effective for making people want to go to war as they make it seem as if they are talking to you and not a bunch of people. It seems as if they are specially recruiting you and that you are different from the others. They do this by using the word “YOU” and by pointing at you as if to be referring to you. The middle one uses a figure that looks like a general or a captain of some sort, this makes  you have more respect for him and trust his opinion. However the poster on the far left has an image of a soldier posed and pointing which is similar to the middle one. Due to the poster having a soldier they decide to have an explosion in the background to make the soldier seem heroic. They do this so when he points at the viewer then the viewer might think “I could also be this heroic” which is every mans dream.

So during my animation I might try and use a similar technique of having a character point to the screen to suggest it is up to the viewer to make the change. This will hopefully motivate more viewers to help and feel empowered.

Creating My Own Poster

After researching the posters above I decided it would be a good idea to create my own poster to help spread awareness for climate change. Since my project is on climate change I thought it would go well with my animation.

I used the app Paint 3D to create a person pointing at the screen, I then found a cartoon Polar Bear face which I decided to mimic and use the same style in mine.

Polar Bear climate change poster

Obviuoulsy with more time I would make it a lot cleaner and nicer looking.

Intentions:

What was the aim of your project?

Explain the concept of your work.

Explain the context of your work.

Do you feel you have met your intentions? Why or why not. Explain the answers that you discovered on this journey.

The aim of my project was to create a successful 2D animation showing the effects of climate change.

Research:

How successful was your research in developing your project?

Did you attend exhibitions or complete any other primary research. Explain the relevance and importance.

Explain the most relevant research of your FMP.

Explain how this research inspired your project and contributed to your learning.

Explain the most important and relevant things that YOU learned from completing research; whether it be a practical/making skills, context, theoretical knowledge, etc.

How well or how much did you rely on your subject knowledge to help you with your project? Explain.

Development:

Explain your idea development stage

Explain the journey you went through with testing and experimentation.

Was this testing and experimentation stage linked to or inspired by specific research?

How did the idea development and experiments help the development of your project?

Explain your problem solving phase. What problems, issues, strengths and weaknesses evolved from this stage and what did you do to fix these?

Methods of working:

How and when did you decide how you were going to make your final outcome(s)?

Explain the methods used to produce your work.

How did your choice of methods enable you to fulfil or answer your statement of intent?

To what extent were these methods of working successful?

What were the strengths of working in this way?

What were the weaknesses of working in this way?

Would you have changed anything about the methods you chose if you were extending or re-working the project?

What are the characteristics of your work?

Final Outcome(s):

Who is your audience?

In what way do your expect your audience/viewers to interact with your work?

What will (or what do you hope) your audience/viewers learn or understand when engaging with your work? (What does your work communicate? What is the context?)

Does your FMP answer your original statement of intent? Why/Why not?

Reflection:

As final body of work, how successful is it?

What changes in your project have occurred and why did they occur?

What do other people think your final outcome(s)?

How do you feel about your final outcome(s)?

How did you use your reflective journal? What role did your diary play in managing your project/time?

Project Management:

How did you plan to use your time in college and at home?

Did you follow your timetable?

Did you manage it as you intended or did you have to re-consider your use of time?

Additional Development/Improvements:

If you could re-work any section, what would it be and how would you do it?

If you were to be given another 10 weeks to extend this project, how would you improve and develop it?
