I went on google maps and went to New York City to get a real representation of what the buildings look like and what they have on their roofs.

Making a house

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 16.35.13

We started off by creating a simple house to get a feel for the software and understand the tools better. So to make this house I created a cube and made the width longer to create the rectangular shape, I then created sub divisions which then allowed me to extrude and create a roof, I then also extruded a small square out to create a garage.

This is another example of a building we made to help learn about the tools. Which I created by making a rectangle then using sub divisions to create the roof like done before, and then using the multi cut tool to create a door which I then extruded inwards.

building my city

Building one

Screen Shot 2018-10-16 at 12.18.35

I started off by creating a big building by created a cube and changing the scale of it. I then added another box on the roof to be the stair case entrance.

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 16.26.01

I then added my personalised textures to make it look more realistic.

My water tower

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 14.06.36

I created a water tower so  I can add to the rooftops of buildings to make them look more realistic and have better visuals. I did this by creating a cylinder then scaling the coordinates to get the right size. I also created a square stool to act as the support of the water tower.

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 14.29.40

I then add divisions and use the multi cut tool to create smaller circles which I can extrude slightly to create curves on the object. As shown on the left where I created the circle to extrude outwards.

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 16.09.07 1

I then used the multi cut tool on the top as well to create a centre and extrude it to create a pointed roof.

Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 16.03.19

As shown above and to the left I created an X shape in between the support as it helps the support and is used in real life which makes it more realistic. As well as adding the stool at the bottom to it.

Screen Shot 2018-10-31 at 11.13.18

I then extruded a pole at the bottom of the water tower to create a pipe and show where the water travels through.

Screen Shot 2018-10-31 at 16.32.37

Lastly I created a ladder going up to the top of the water tower to show where people/the staff can access it and check everything is running smoothly.

This is the final design for the water tower as shown above with the textures.

Building 2

Screen Shot 2018-10-31 at 16.33.38

I started off by creating a cube and scaling it to the right size etc. Then I created subdivisions on the top face of the building and then extruded the divisions bordering the cube to create a wall/ledge type thing. I then also created another cube to act as the stairs to the roof.

Screen Shot 2018-10-31 at 16.35.08

As you can see I added the water tower to the main building to make it more realistic. I also added a third building which I will get to later.

Air Vent

I started by creating a cube and scaling it to look like so. Then duplicating it using cmd+d and rotating it to make it look like a pizza box.

Screen Shot 2018-11-05 at 14.16.09

I then selected the two inside faces and used the bridge tool to connect them together. As well  as this I added some grates by using the bridge tool

Screen Shot 2018-11-05 at 14.18.39

I then selected the grates and angled them so they appear more 3D and realistic as an air vent does have them slightly angled.

I then added tubes to show where the ventilation is coming from however it did not look the best so I deleted them after.

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 14.49.58

I then created another tower and extruded part of it to create a balcony

screen shot 2018-11-07 at 14.51.43

As shown here I did the extrusion on the left side which adds a different shape to the tower where I will create a balcony.

screen shot 2018-11-12 at 09.53.57

I then created a cuboid and extruded sections down which makes a fence type object as shown in the image.

I then copy and pasted it around the edge of the square face and created a balcony with a fence on.

I then went to the bottom of the building and created many subdivisions which Then allowed me to extruded out and in, creating many windows and a door.

screen shot 2018-11-28 at 10.31.06

I then textured the building with a grey rock type of texture.

screen shot 2018-11-13 at 12.28.57

I created one singular cuboid then created  divisions and duplicated it so that I can bridge different parts together and create a window.

screen shot 2018-11-13 at 12.30.26

As seen here I used the bridge tool to create different segments of the window.

screen shot 2018-11-13 at 12.36.59

Then I added a back to the window where I will use different colours and textures to create the illusion of the window.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 09.30.45

Air Vent: I started off with a cube which will be the base of the air vent.

Then I added a circle which I then gave height to and created many subdivisions. I then extruded the edge of the circle.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 09.39.46

As well as extruding the edge I also extruded every other section in the circle to act as fans/ventilation.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 09.57.06

I added a metallic texture to it which gives it a realistic feel to it.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 11.29.00

As well as the metallic texture I also added vent textures on the side and back of the vent.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 12.01.11

Then using the bevel tool I created curved edges as they do slightly in real life.

screen shot 2018-11-20 at 12.30.32

I made 4 different box/crate types so I can make multiple heights and sizes of them.

screen shot 2018-11-21 at 11.08.57

This is the inspiration I used when creating my bill board.

screen shot 2018-11-21 at 11.00.24

I started off by creating to flat planes next to each other which will act as the actual billboard.

screen shot 2018-11-21 at 11.17.16

I created another flat plane to act as the base of the bill board.

screen shot 2018-11-21 at 14.29.03

The pole at the bottom is used to hold it up and will eventually have a ladder there so you can go up to the bill board.

screen shot 2018-11-26 at 14.18.23

As shown in the picture above I created a ladder as well as texturing most of the bill board.

screen shot 2018-11-26 at 13.42.41

I used a inbetweeners advert as the bill board advert and made sure it fitted perfectly.

screen shot 2018-11-21 at 16.22.54

I created a skylight as well as shown above. I did this by creating a cuboid and scaling in the sides and front and back which creates a triangular shape.

screen shot 2018-12-19 at 11.05.13

These are some of the final textures used.

Final rooftops in unity

screen shot 2018-12-19 at 16.31.00

Evaluation

This unit is about creating rooftops that allow you to jump between them as well as looking realistic and having objects you could climb/do parkour over. We started off by creating a simple house so we could get familiar with the controls and tools of Maya. We then had to research NYC and the rooftops of their buildings. We did this by google images as well as a google earth view. We then started making the 3D models and buildings in maya. I started off with creating all the buildings then creating the water towers, vents and the other rooftop necessities after. This way I had a layout of how far my buildings were going to be apart and what I needed to put and where. After creating all the buildings and other models/objects for the roof we then exported it into unity and had to place all the objects again one by one and make the objects have collision or no collision depending on what we wanted.
